Behind the Dye: The Art of Our Vintage Wash Techniques

Behind the Dye: The Art of Our Vintage Wash Techniques

There’s something about a perfectly worn-in piece—soft to the touch, a little sun-faded, maybe even a frayed edge or two. It tells a story before you even put it on. At NSF, we don’t just chase that feeling—we recreate it.

Our vintage wash techniques are more than just aesthetics. They’re a blend of art, chemistry, and a lot of trial and error. Every faded seam and soft patina is intentional. It’s the result of years of testing natural dyes, experimenting with enzyme washes, and hand-distressing garments in small batches right here in Los Angeles.

We use a mix of mineral and pigment dyes to get that signature NSF lived-in look. Some pieces are stone-washed for subtle highs and lows; others are treated with hand-applied techniques that make no two exactly alike. The goal? Clothes that feel like you’ve had them forever, from the very first wear.

We believe the imperfections are the beauty. They give each piece soul. And in a world chasing the next new thing, we like to slow down and make things that last.
